Fortress Europe Border Updates

Update 16 - 01.04.2020

Quarantine in Turkey

The refugees that were 'evacuated' from Pazarkule last Thursday have remained in closed camps ever since. As almost all of them had their phones taken from them, we are not receiving much information regarding the living conditions anymore. But the little information we are able to receive worries us. We know that approximately 6000 people from the surrounding border area have been brought to closed camps. Some have been moved to gyms, former detention camps and some deportation camps. Judging from the videos we have received, people still are still unable to keep sufficient distance from one another. They still have to queue for food and water. Some of them sleep in a gym with hundreds of others right next to them, others share dirty containers without functioning drains. Information is becoming increasingly more difficult to obtain, most of the people we have previously had contact with no longer reply - presumably their phones have either been taken from them, or they may lack electricity to charge them.

The video displayed is one of the last ones we recieved, an Afghan man currently detained in the Camp in Malatya explains: "Today is the 29th of March, 2020. This is the first food we received today at 12 pm, after a similar dinner last night. We are hungry. If the Corona virus does not kill us, the malnutrition will do it."

The picture below shows the food ration per person, designed for 2500 people today in the Camp in Osmaniye. It was delivered in a box with the logos of Red Crescent and EU. We are still investigating, but for us there is no other conclusion than that the EU pays for it within the framework of the Turkey deal.

The food box that was presumably "donated" by the EU

As a small piece of evidence for all those outraged by the idea that people would want to leave Turkey for Europe, even though they are supplied with provisions under the Turkey deal: they are wonderfully supplied with one loaf of bread and two cups of Ayran. Thanks Europe. It is a shame that taxpayers' money is used for this. The refugees have to endure constant hunger, and the EU is still marketing this as a good alternative arrangement to combat the reasons why people flee. Maybe everyone should pause for a moment when they next buy toilet paper and whine about Corona lockdown. Stop and think about the people who have no way of protecting themselves because they are locked up in crowded camps in Greece and Turkey without access to sanitary facilities and medical care. Stop and think about the people who are locked away for no reason other than asking for protection, and instead remain hungry and removed from contact to the outside world.
